Ice production and marketing

For fishing, processing, transporting and trading fish, ice provides a suitable room temperature, but also a cold environment, allowing seafood to stay fresh and hydrated.

Not all ice creams are the same. Every application and every industry has a specific demand. The nature of the ice cream chosen depends on what you intend to do with it.

For the production of its ice cream, MIDEPECAM has opted for ice in grains or flakes which adapts very well to flat surfaces such as fish stalls. This ice, being smaller, more easily conforms to the various shapes, and thus offers a larger contact surface.

The ice flakes vary in size (10-100 mm) and are about 6 mm thick; no big lumps; can be easily dumped into an insulated container / crate with a lid.

The commercial production of flake ice started in YOUPWE (Douala) during 2000 years. The distribution of flake ice is made for the conservation of fresh fish with a view to reducing post-catch losses.

To date, MIDEPECAM has three ice production units:

  • Douala with a capacity of 15 tonnes of ice cream per day
  • Limbé with a capacity of 7.5 tonnes of ice cream per day
  • Ideal with a capacity of 2.5 tons per day.
